The Cultural
Center of El Salvador will hold its official opening ceremony on Friday
June 2nd. 2000 dedicating its exhibit space to five international artists
who during their careers have made works of art influenced by Salvadoran
lifestyle. David Amoroso acrylic on canvas, Sueraya Shaheen photography,
Martin Bernier conceptual art installation, Sebastian Derumgs photography,
and Maria Oussemi literature.
This art exhibit is organized by the volunteer Directors of the Espacio
Cultural Salvadoreño and was made possible by the generous support
of the Fundación Cáder.
Pop artist David Amoroso incorporates visions from his visits to El Salvador
in his colorful acrylic paintings on canvas including: religion, myths,
games, landscapes, city scapes, flora, and fauna. American artist, David
Amoroso, lives and works in Washington, D.C.
Photographer Sueraya Shaheen monochromatic installation documents the
lives of Salvadoran children. The photographs on this installation are
part of her contribution to the award winning book Caught in the Crossfire
by Maria Ousseimi. Sueraya Shaheen is a native of Washington, D.C. lives
and works in Washington, D.C. and New York.
Martin Bernier conceptual art installation is based on the traditional
Salvadoran myth of the wish bracelet. In his installation, Bernier documents
the process of the wish bracelet in a mix media collage including found
objects, x-rays, and photographs. Martin Bernier was born in Paris, France.
Lives and works in New York.
Photographer Sebastian Derumgs captures the sugar cane season in El Salvador
in his stunning black and white photographs of field workers and luscious
landscapes. Sebastian Derumgs was born in Switzerland. Lives and works
in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Maria Ousseimi’s award winning book “Caught in the Crossfire,
growing up in a war zone” is intended to educate children on the
consequences of war. It covers the consequences of the wars in El Salvador,
Lebanon, and Washington, D.C. among others. Maria Ousseimi is a documentary
filmmaker and her work has received many honors including a Golden Gate
Award at the San Francisco Film Festival, and an Honorable Distinction
at the Chicago International Film Festival. Maria Ousseimi was born in
Lebanon. She splits her time between Beirut, London, and New York.
As a member of The Galleries of Dupont Circle, the center will participate
each first Friday of the month in the event "First Friday Dupont
Circle Gallery Night". During this night, the center will host an
artist reception in honor of the exhibit on view and the official gallery
opening ceremony from 5-9 pm. This event is free and open to public. |
