"SYMBOLS"
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS BY CLARA DE SOTO
ON VIEW AT THE ESPACIO CULTURAL SALVADOREÑO, APRIL 25 - MAY 10,
2000WASHINGTON, D.C.
Drawing on
new Salvadoran scholarship, Symbols by de Soto, presents more than twenty
stunning acrylic on canvases by Salvadoran artist, Clara de Soto. The
exhibition offers fresh insights into this new scholarship. It is on view
at the Espacio Cultural Salvadoreño, April 25 through May 10, 2000.
An artist reception will be held on Friday May 5th, from 6-9 pm.
The exhibition is organized by the Espacio Cultural Salvadoreño
and Rivaga Art. It is made possible by the Fundación Cáder.
The exhibition celebrates the opening of the first art exhibit by the
Espacio Cultural Salvadoreño, an all-volunteer not for profit center
dedicated to promoting the arts and culture of El Salvador.
De Soto, known throughout her established artistic career for her creative
talent, once again has broken the mold from her contemporaries creating
her most innovative works on canvas to date. By including symbols from
the Salvadoran Mayan ancestors, as well as other ancient cultures, de
Soto has been able to appeal to a worldly audience through her luminous
silent language in her abstract paintings. Her symbols are open to interpretation,
investigation, so each viewer can find a personal meaning. As de Soto
describes it:
"A universal melange of symbols is reborn in my work in the form
of perfect worlds. Even though these consist of imperfect forms and figures,
the surroundings are orderly, silent, and clean; ingenuity and creativity
go forward hand-in-hand; along the path of spiritual search, there are
no mundane or materialistic elements which, because they are so human,
tend to disappear (as man does) in the profound darkness of creation;
there is no hell, only oblivion - non-existence.
My work proclaims the harmony that I javaeive are the spiritual forces
in nature. My interaction with my art induces a longing for harmony in
me, an inner peace and tranquility".
The center will host and artist reception in honor of Clara de Soto open
to the general public during the "First Friday Galleries of Dupont
Circle event" on May 5th, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
